Is printer ink a rip off?
The price of printer ink has always been high but with the economic crisis it’s reached to new levels. So why is it so expensive? Well, the printer manufacturers say it’s because they spend millions every year researching and developing new, better technology in their labs in a effort to give the end user better prints from their printer.
This is only half of the truth however, what they don’t say is the fact that they are selling their printers at cost price i.e. not making any profit on them. They do this so people will buy their printer not realising the cost of the replacement ink cartridges and then sell them ink cartridges at a very high profit margin in order to make the money back that they lost in selling you a printer.
The worst culprits of this selling tactic are HP and Lexmark who have been known to offer printers at half the price of one set of cartridges. Epson are not as bad, however, Epson ink is still far from cheap. A set of Epson R285 inks will set you back over £40.
